Before architecture takes form, there is terrain: a slope, a rock, a horizon, a line of vegetation, the movement of water. These elements are not simply the setting for architecture. They are the beginning of it.

The Land Comes First

Architecture begins before the first line is drawn.

It begins with an understanding of place — its geology, its topography, its vegetation, its light and its changing seasons. The land is not an empty surface waiting to be occupied. It already contains a language, a history and a structure.

To design within a landscape is therefore not simply to decide where to place a building. It is to understand what is already there, and to allow the architecture to respond to it.
